Yes, it actually happened. The thing I've been warning people about for years. A client's website was on a hosting server that had a catastrophic failure and it is unknown whether or not the files can be restored. It was no one's fault, just an awful and unlikely set of circumstances that led to equipment failure on a large scale.
From the client's side, if they had been relying on web host backups or didn't have a backup at all, they could now be looking at rebuilding their website from scratch. Thankfully, we have been running daily backups for them, and will be able to restore a copy from just hours before the disaster.
Please, please, please.... have a system in place to back up your website automatically, and store it somewhere other than where your site is hosted.
